Shabby-Geek Goodwill Table Gets Glowing Makeover

If you saw my last “glowing table” post, you hopefully thought it was very cool, but possibly out of your league abilities-wise. Here’s another idea that’s much easier to make, and won’t require you to have a CNC router. On the other hand, it won’t help you learn geography, but there’s always Google Maps or a printed atlas for that.

This glowing table started off as a $9 partially-broken item from goodwill. The marble top was cracked, and creator
“ragnaroverby” cracked it further to add to this effect. These marble shards were then placed in a specially-prepared mold the size of the table. The mold was made water-tight and greased for easy removal of the repaired tabletop.

The cracks were filled in with resin containing blue glow-in-the-dark pigment, then an epoxy coating was put on the surface for a smooth, clear finish. The wood parts of the table were spray-painted brown and blue, then covered with polyurethane. The project turned out nicely, and is certainly the best-looking $9 table I have ever seen.

If this and the other table doesn’t make you want to start experimenting with glowing material, I’m not sure what will. This is on my mental list of projects to start on, but it will have to get in line behind the 50 or so others in my queue. That’s the problem with seeing so many cool things to make – you never have enough time to get to all of them!
