Engadget Expand: A Slideshow of Maker Meets Consumer Tech

The Make: team is live all day today at Engadget’s Expand NY. Somewhere at the crossroads of Maker Faire and CES, dozens of maker-inspired and consumer tech-inspired projects and vendors are enlightening 10k attendees to the next wave of possibilities.

Makers Johngineer and Becky Stern could be seen walking around wearing homemade wristwatch or sound-responsive hat projects, while attendees filled up two Social Wearable Workshops by Kate Hartman, author of the recently published Make: Wearable Electronics book. Makers like Poursteady who have been highly received at the past two World Maker Faires in NYC are competing in Insert Coin for a $15k prize (you have until 4pm ET to vote!), while 2013’s winner DI Wire was back to display their 2014 model alongside historical models of the machine over the years (which have also been featured here and here). Eighteen designers showcased interactive garments in the Make: Wearables on the Runway yesterday, while workshops continue throughout the day today.

Corporate sponsors are integrating maker tech in their displays while makers are aspiring to Maker Pro status, launching their own initiatives for weather, sous video cooking, and drones, just to name a few. The slideshow below is only a snapshot of what’s on display. If you’re in NYC you have until 6pm tonight to swing by the Javits Center – it’s free to attend. Otherwise stay tuned to the makezine.com homepage for more coverage!
