The Hackaday Prize, a fairly large annual contest by Hackaday, kicked off this morning. As you can see in the somewhat cryptic teaser above, the theme is “Build Something That Matters” and up for grabs are $300,000 in prizes.

They’ve broken the contest into 5 separate challenges. You can enter in any or all of them if you would like.

  • Design Your Concept March 14th –  April 25th
  • Anything Goes April 25th – May 30th
  • Citizen Scientist May 30th – July 11th
  • Automation July 11th – August 22nd
  • Assistive Technologies August 22nd – October 3rd

After all 5 rounds, 100 projects will be chosen to go to the finals. In the end, 5 will be chosen as winners. The main prizes are as follows:

  1. $150,000 and a residency at the Supplyframe design lab
  2. $25,000
  3. $10,000
  4. $10,000
  5. $5,000

One really cool thing they’re doing is sending up to $200 to potential entry ideas based off of community votes. You can enter your idea and as people vote for you, your dollar amount goes upward. You could get a $200 jumpstart to your project. It isn’t a ton of money, but it is certainly enough to get a few parts and pieces to get you started!
