The folks at Modd3d show us how to make a confetti cannon:
I’ll show you how to build a pneumatic confetti cannon that sprays bits of paper all over the place at the push of a button. It is safe to use and easy to build, and the confetti shower effect it produces is excellent for stage shows, dances, parties, and those times when you need to make the biggest mess possible in just under one second.
It uses a fire extinguisher, a sprinkler valve, and a plastic pipe. – Link.

Another feature one could add for safety is something called a ‘pneumatic fuse.’ One can get these at McMaster-Carr
Sorry for the out-of-sequence posts, got a new hybridized LAN, still kinda hinky, anyway. . .
The Variac, while a cool device, doesn’t provide isolation, surprisingly enough, so if you go this route, also deploy an isolation transformer. With a DC solenoid, battery operation could be achieved. Either add some anti-spike hardware, or be sure to employ a robust switch, both in terms of through current and blocking potential.

That’s hard. You can make a pretty damn big mess really quickly with a couple rolls of toilet paper, a shop-vac and a paint roller.
@featheredfrog: Thanks! =]
You realize I’m going to have to try the shop-vac thing now. You should write that one up.
