The Greater Newark Mini Maker Faire is set for April 5 and the Newark Museum. The event is a celebration of creativity and ingenuity in the New Jersey maker community. The fair invites makers—from woodworkers to beekeepers, from robotics engineers to 3D printing artists–to showcase their projects. Makers will share the stage with the museum’s art and science collections acting as the ultimate ‘maker’ examples.

Here are several of the presenters worth checking out:

  • The keynote presenter will be Nervous System. The founders will discuss Nervous System’s efforts to revolutionize product design through generative techniques, 3D printing and interactivity. Along the way, they will take several detours into the realms of natural pattern formation, simulation, and biology. The talk will focus on their latest project, Kinematics, a 4D printing technique they created to create complex, foldable forms for 3D printing.

  • In Steven Spielberg’s 1982 film, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the stranded alien uses household parts to build a space communicator to “phone home.” E.T.’s communicator was created and built by Henry Feinberg, who interprets science and technology for museum, TV, and theme park audiences.
  • WaterBotics will engage attendees with a watery installation where you can learn about and apply concepts of buoyancy and stability, gears, torque, 2D and 3D motion, computer programming, and engineering in the design of a submersible robot. Stop by their booth to play and tinker with WaterBots in a small pool.

The Newark Museum is the largest museum in New Jersey museum. There are 80 galleries of world-class collections including American, Asian, African and classical art.
