Presenter: Tiffany Threadgould
Project: Recycled Food Wrapper Craft Projects
Day/Time: Saturday at 11 AM
Tell us about what you’ll be demonstrating at the CRAFT booth at Maker Faire:
We’ll be showing makers how to ReMake everyday scrap materials into new! At our booth we’ll have food wrapper that can be transformed into wallets, gift bows, and much more. We’ll also have a display of other upcycled items for inspiration along with a sneak peak at some of the projects in our DIY recycling book, titled ReMake It, that will be on store shelves early 2011.
How did you get started with crafting?
I was involved with 4-H as a kid. My mom was a huge inspiration and taught me how to sew when I was 9 years old. A lot of those 4-H skills – sewing, basketweaving, painting and more now apply to my design job. Rather than using traditional materials, I use traditional crafts techniques and make them with garbage! Think plastic bags woven into a wastebasket, food wrappers sewn into tote bags, and much more! If it’s garbage, there’s always an upcycled design solution.
What are your main sources of inspiration?
Trash cans are a big source of inspiration. I always like to see what people commonly throw away and create solutions for those materials. I also love crafty blog sites like Craftzine.com, Core77, and more. All of my crafty friends and designers that I work really influence my work, and collaboration always makes projects better.
What new idea (in or outside of your field) has excited you most recently?
I just love this new generation of crafters! It’s no longer tea cozies and quilts. It’s taking traditional crafts and adding a twist. Incorporating design to make projects clever, fun, and enjoyable to wear and have as home decor.
What is your motto?
Garbage has feelings, too!
