View from Inside a Running 4-stroke Engine

Ever wonder what was going on inside your car engine, but were too afraid to open up a hole and just look? Here’s a video made by someone who did just that (ok, maybe it took a little more effort). Can you identify all 4 of the strokes that go into a single cycle of the engine? [via neatorama]

Yes, but this film doesn’t show all 4. There’s no exhaust compression stroke.

(actually, it’s just missing an exhaust stroke. I mis-named it)

I don’t what i expected (well more like a violet flash maybe) but at the rate (~ 100rpm/4) of a cycle i sure didn’t expect a wispy campfire-like flame for fuel/air ignition – amazing!

I had the same reaction… it would be really interesting to compare with a direct injection engine. I would expect that DI have a more rapid even burn.

It was everything I expected but less violent. I expected the fuel mixture to be a thick white cloud and the explosion to be a huge ball of fire.

That would have been a cool project to fit a camera into the cylinder like that. I wonder how it was done?

I am reiterating jasons comment that this video does NOT depict a complete cycle of a 4 stroke engine.

The author asking his readers to “Can you identify all 4 of the strokes that go into a single cycle of the engine?” is potentially misleading and or confusing.

Well, it appears that the exaust valve opens, but we are missing the footage from the middle of the exaust stroke to the TDC of the intake stroke. Still, with the exaust valve opening, all 4 strokes/cycles are represented, although not completely.

This has really improved my understanding of a four stroke engine. Very cool video, thanks!
