Folks at Carnegie Mellon are developing displays with inflatable buttons to make for a tactile touch screen. The video has got to be seen to be believed. Via Core77.

Id make a huge bet you’ll see these displays in cars within the next couple of years. I have a feeling there will be some pretty amazing innovaton in the process such as much more configurable displays. They could even be pushed as a safety feature in cars allowing people to use touch rather than their eyes. What is really neat is hobbyists will be able to do this, though of course without sellign their product so as not to infringe patent. This is just genius.
for long term use, remember to trim your fingernails. All the membrane buttons in this office start disintegrating after 2 1/2 years.
I suspect they’d have to use silicone, vinyl or rubber instead as latex degrades when in contact with any oils.
