If you’re sick of cutting logs into mere halves for firewood, here’s a new idea, an axe that can instead split a log into quadrants in only one blow! British Columbia resident K. Holmz decided to make his after buying a welder. He had nothing to weld except axe heads, so he “decided to create something new.” Besides the welder and axe heads, grinding and polishing tools were needed to finish this beast.
For this build, the axe head that the handle is not directly inserted into was cut in half, then roughly contoured to the shape of the central head. After being properly cut and positioned slightly behind the main blade, the two axe-halves were then welded in place. As you might suspect, cutting an axe head in half isn’t exactly easy; two angle grinder cutting blades were used just to make this split. During this process, quite a bit of grinding and polishing was done after attachment to obtain the brilliant sheen seen in the first picture.
If you’re skeptical (as I was) about how well this kind of axe works, check out the video below. Holmz says that small fir and pine logs (under 7″) can be split in one shot most of this time, but as things get bigger, the percentage drops. According to him, if it doesn’t fully split the log, this compound axe is fairly easy to remove for a second swing.
