Nation Geographic’s Best Space Pictures of 2010 A colorful, craggy column of dust and gas dubbed the Mystic Mountain stars in a picture from the Hubble Space Telescope released April 23 as part of celebrations for Hubble’s 20th anniversary. The picture highlights the results of star birth in the Carina nebula.
Interesting paper from Neel Joshi, Sing Bing Kang, C. Lawrence Zitnick, Richard Szeliski at Microsoft Research, describing how they mounted 3 gyroscopes and a 3-axis accelerometer on a DSLR to record the camera’s motion while a picture is being taken, and used that data to automatically deblur the resulting image at the software level. Claire of Poopscape points us to these eerily beautiful photographs from artist Daniel Del Nero. Del Nero creates small scale cardboard buildings and covers them in flour and mold spores and then photographs the resulting decay.
Sean Lee wanted to take close-up pictures of his projects, but his camera’s focal range fell short. His wife suggested taping on a lens from a pair of dollar store reading glasses. Sean shared this workaround on Make: Projects, and posted impressive before and after shots, especially for 50 cents.
