When I was a kid, I remember drawing lines on paper and saying they were the schematics for a robot. Of course I had no real concept of circuitry or electronics at that age, but it was cool to think I did. Now what if I’d given some Bare Conductive Paint (now available in the Maker Shed) to 6 year old me?
Tangible interface researcher Andrea Bianchi, along with his colleague, Ian Oakley (University of Madeira / Carnegie Mellon Europe), have come with a novel approach to interacting with a mobile device. Using the magnetometer built into most modern smartphones, Bianchi and Oakley have created a series of tangible user interface demonstrations that go beyond what’s achievable with capacitive touch displays.
Zach “Hoeken” Smith just emailed us about his Stencil8 project, a straightforward technique for stenciling/squeegeeing on solder for surface mount (SMT) components. This classic project from MAKE alum Mark de Vinck is a great last minute project that will scare the candy out of any unsuspecting trick-or-treater. It’s a relatively simple build that can probably be pieced together with items you have laying in your junk pile or picked with a quick trip to RadioShack and the auto parts store.
DARPA, in collaboration with Boston Dynamics, has created a variety of fascinating robots in the past, including one that can outrun Usain Bolt and another that has a surprisingly human-like gait.
