Maker Faire

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth — a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the maker movement.

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these people come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

Scott’s Pentagonal Dragon Tiling on a Dodecahedron

Scott’s Pentagonal Dragon Tiling on a Dodecahedron

Each face of “DodecaHedron of Dragons II” by California artist Scott Van Note is identically patterned, hand-carved on a pentagonal tiling designed by Scott himself. I had the pleasure of meeting Scott at BAMF 2011, where he was helping out at the Explorable Microscopy booth. We started talking, and he handed me this amazing object. I caught up with him, after the Faire, and got him to answer a few questions about it.

Maker Teen Inspired by Faire to Build Robot Minions

Maker Teen Inspired by Faire to Build Robot Minions

Right before this past weekend’s Maker Faire, I got an email message from Ben, a 13 year old from South East Pennsylvania. He told me an amazing story about him going to last year’s Maker Faire New York, learning how to solder, and then planning and building a telepresence robot for a science fair project afterwards. I told him I wanted to publish his story and asked to have a parent email me permission. The letter I got from his mom was amazingly moving. Not only had Ben learned soldering at the Faire and parleyed that into an amazing robot science project, he’d had a very serious illness leading up to the NY Faire and had set his sights on the Faire as a get-well goal for himself.

A Peek at the People Who Make Maker Faire

A Peek at the People Who Make Maker Faire

One of our Maker Faire Daily bloggers, Kent Barnes, posted a few pics of the crew doing their thing during this weekend’s Faire. There are so many amazing people who put in untold numbers of hours to make these shows happen. Here are just a few of their smiling faces, there are some more on the link, and there are countless others unpictured here, but all equally worthy of heartfelt appreciation.
