Maker Faire

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth — a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the maker movement.

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these people come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

Maker Shed — A Best “DIY Project” at the Faire

Maker Shed — A Best “DIY Project” at the Faire

As someone who’s witnessed the entire process of setting up, staffing, and breaking down the Sheds at most of our Faires, I can attest to the fact that it’s an absolutely staggering amount of effort — endless grunt work, logistics, stocking and merchandising, shipping and receiving, point of sales, product demoing, and on and on and on. And the fact that it’s all done by a relatively small number of staff people (and a platoon of precious volunteers) is equally impressive.

There’s a lot of excited post-Faire activity over on our Maker Faire Facebook page. People are sharing their experiences, posting photos and videos, and generally gushing over their weekend. Moments after the Faire was over, I started a topic on the Faire FB page about favorite moments. There are a lot of good comments there, including some good criticism, there. Check it out.

Help Lifesize Mousetrap Grow

Lifesize Mousetrap provides a great opportunity to see real world applications of physics, spectacle and problem solving. Perhaps you remember endless hours of fussing with cardboard and plastic parts trying to get the mousetrap together to catch the mouse. Mostly, I recall that the build was way more interesting than the actual game. Over the years, Mark Perez has built the life size version of Moustrap along with his band of merry Rubes. They’ve taken the show on the road to Maker Faires in Austin, Detroit and San Mateo. People keep asking for more, and so they’ve set up a Kickstarter campaign to fund a traveling version of Lifesize Mousetrap to bring to schools and demonstrate their festive take on the game.

AND… the Winner is…

AND… the Winner is…

We had a great time at the judging event for element14’s Great Global Hackserspace Challenge on Sunday at Maker Faire. The final three projects were all pretty smashing, and it was difficult to choose one over the others. They all had their different strengths. Pumping Station: One’s Biosensing Array was a pretty sophisticated device for […]
