Nascent Appleton, WI, hackerspace DHMN created this candy dispenser out of junk. It uses everything from CD jewel cases to a paper towel tube to a motor harvested from an iRobot Scooba. Apparently 90% of the build was done by kids ages 5-13.
3D volumetric displays are a lot like jetpacks. They’re both science fiction inspired technologies that are technically feasible, yet never quite make it to the practicable stage. Even though these technologies are just out of reach, every once in a while you’ll see a demo that advances the state of the art enough to keep you going. Check out this demo from researchers at Osaka University, where they’ve created a 3D volumetric display using directed fog and multiple projectors.

Fortunately, Austrian filmmaker Benjamin Hable has discovered that you can use your cell phone, digital camera, or other CCD-equipped gadget (rather like the special sunglasses discovered by “Rowdy” Roddy Piper’s character in John Carpenter’s 1988 conspiranoia flick They Live) to see the fnords. Benjamin made Augmented Paranoia for a January 17 exhibition called bits and ohm, and used the public-domain portrait of Stephen Colbert released for the Colbert Nation Portrait Challenge. Reminds me of a project I did a few years back ( (also inspired by They Live) involving deliberately burning subliminal messages into the phosphors of analog TV tubes. [Thanks, Benjamin!]
Check out this tiny laser cutter from instructables user Groover. Using easily sourced and salvaged parts including and a couple optical drives and an Arduino, Groover was able to assemble a unit that, though low power, is able to mark wood and cut paper.
