Zachary Coffin‘s Colossus is a large-scale sculpture of wood and steel that holds massive granite rocks suspended above the ground. Ropes hanging from the rocks are pulled by attendees of Maker Faire Bay Area 2011, setting the entire seventy foot tall structure slowly spinning with great inertia.

Ever since the release of the Redpark Cable for iOS and Brian Jepson’s Make: Project, this bundle has been scarce. We just received a shipment of parts so the Redpark Breakout Pack for Arduino and iOS is currently back in the Maker Shed! For those that missed it, this cable along with the P4 RS232 adapter lets you talk to microcontrollers and sensors with your iOS powered device without jail breaking!
In the Spring of 2011, I worked on a project with artists Steve Hanson and Elliot Clapp that was part of Apexart’s “Let it end like this” group show, curated by Todd Zuniga. Steve created a generative questionnaire that polled gallery-goers and presented them with their Last Words.

FAB7 is the annual international Fab Lab event which gathers field practitioners and laboratory researchers from the Fab Lab network and beyond, for a week of hands-on workshops and a one day academic symposium on the principles and applications of digital fabrication. Marc de Vinck, MAKE’s Director of Product Development, will be speaking in the Applications track about Maker Shed and what works for us: open source hardware, kits that help makers get started with stuff they’re interested in, and more.
Joe Sandor and the crew from Chicago Crucible demonstrate an iron pour at Maker Faire Detroit 2011. These metalheads collected metal from old radiators and coke from a Detroit power plant and then fired up the furnace. They poured the molten steel into a watermelon and other decorative molds, which were created at the Faire. Learn more about the lost art of the iron pour.
