Innovation, One Cup of Coffee at a Time

Armed with an idea, I set about designing the concept using 3D modeling software. Though the computer model was relatively easy to make, creating a physical prototype proved challenging. I needed advanced manufacturing technology like a milling machine and an injection molder, each of which can cost thousands of dollars. Fortunately, I read in a newsletter about a fabrication lab that was opening up in Chicago just down the street from me.

Twente’s Big Mini Maker Faire

With 70+ makers and more than 5,000 visitors at last month’s Twente mini Maker Faire, the event wasn’t so mini. The fair was housed in a refurbished factory hall which besides a massive space for events house a large number of creative start-up companies. Fortunately the location (Creatieve Fabriek) and production crew were up to the task, so, although busy and bustling with activity, the event turned out to be quite relaxed.
