STEAMLabs invited kids and families to build crazy Rube Goldberg machines at their brand-new Makerspace in downtown Toronto, and the resulting video is 62 seconds of fun. Makes me think OK Go should just hire these kids to do their next video.
STEAMLabs is a non-profit, all-ages Makerspace dedicated to empowering kids and adults to create and innovate. They’re in the last few days of a Kickstarter to raise money to buy the tools for their new space — laser cutter, CNC router, 3D printers, and woodworking and electronics equipment — and they’re really close to meeting their goal. Check it out and support them before May 9 if you can.
Co-founders Andy Forest and Marianne Mader launched STEAMLabs (STEAM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) in 2012 as Canada’s first Makerspace for kids. Andy is an educator, web developer, and Make: contributor who works with the Maker Education Initiative on the Makerspace Playbook, a guide for people setting up new Makerspaces. Marianne is a planetary scientist and geologist who works on great stuff like meteorites, impact craters, and lunar and planetary exploration missions. The STEAMLabs programs include fun topics like Minecraft, web-controlled Arduino robotics, and 3D design and printing. We look forward to seeing their new space buzzing with new tools soon.
