Twigs into Toys: Build Your Own Rustic Building Blocks

Nature-Blocks-DIY-Toys-Tutorial-9

If you ask someone what toy they most often played with as a child, they will most likely reply with some variety of building block set. It might be Lego, Lincoln Logs, Tinkertoy or K’Nex, to name a few of the more popular mass-produced toys.

Instead of shelling out your hard earned money on machine made blocks, take a walk into the woods and start collecting materials for a DIY rustic play set.

These Waldorf-inspired blocks created by Liska Myers at Adventure in a Box are truly one-of-a-kind. The best part is that they can be made for free with the help of a hand saw and a vice to hold the wood as you cut.

Create your own expansion set every time you go for a walk with the kids. As you pick up new interesting bits of nature, remember to be kind to Mother Nature, only take branches and bark that have fallen off naturally. Also be aware of creepy crawlies that could be living inside an old piece of bark.

I simply adore these Schliech woodland animal figurines Liska has posing here at the cafe table.
