DiResta: Split log Benches

DiResta: Split log Benches

In each bi-monthly episode of DiResta, artist and master builder Jimmy DiResta (Dirty Money, Hammered, Against the Grain, Trash for Cash) lets us into his workshop, to look over his shoulder while he builds whatever strikes his fancy. On this episode of DiResta, Jimmy goes lumberjack and makes a rustic bench out of a hefty log he felled in the woods. I like how he uses the chainsaw blade as a rough measuring device and a finishing tool.–Stett Holbrook

Jimmy’s notes:

Up at the country house there is often a need for a quick bench. Here you see me go out the woods to find a piece of tree I can turn into a pair of benches. I looked for a tree that was damaged or dying. The tree in the video was prefect because I was able to cut the trunk in half before I cut it free. The benches double as steps to get in and out of the hot tub.

Who needs a planer? I’ll just this here chainsaw…

Great project, but I saw several instances going against best (safe) practice on chainsaw use. Please wear safety gear (not just light gloves and what appear to be steel toe caps footwear) when putting up such videos and never cut without holding the front handle

Axe and drill, not Axe Drill

I hate complainers but have to agree that if a professional ‘Maker’…meaning gets paid for it and benefits from people viewing it- is going to disregard basic safety practice, he should not publish for beginners to emulate. I love Diresta, but would hate for litigation to put him off…
