Summer Tub of Fun

Today is my daughter’s last day of school, and though part of me is looking forward to lazy days by the pool and frequent trips to the snow cone stand, I’m also nervous about those moments in the day where the inevitable “I’m bored!” rears its ugly head. I’ve been gradually gathering and stashing a few things to have on hand as boredom busters, but I love the way Marie at Make and Takes has put together this Summer Tub of Fun so the kids know exactly where to go to find something fun and creative to do this summer. What other ideas for things to include in the tub can you offer? Leave them in the comments!

The box of fun is an awesome idea, but I think that having it within children´s reach might trump the idea of it being a boredom buster. Children get used to the goodies in the box and then when boredom comes crashing, it won´t amuse them anymore A good option that I can think of is rotating the goodies, so there’s always new things in the box, not the same ones, but you can have staples stay in the box. That way one week it is pipecleaners and modelling compound, paper and scissors, the other week is ingredients to make papier mache accessories and plastic gems. And make sure YOU are the one to make a big production out of bringing stuff out on boredom day, not to have it lying around. Well, just a thought!

My kids get no help with boredom. Pretty much a shrug and a sympathetic look. They generally become pretty inventive when they get bored.

Whenever I told either of my parents that I was bored, they’d give me chores to do. I soon learned how to amuse myself. With so many aspects of society creating an “entertain me!” mindset, the ability to amuse yourself is of the utmost importance.
