Make Like an Egyptian
Maker Faire Cairo became the biggest Maker Faire in the Arab world last Saturday, with participants coming in to celebrate the joy of making from all over the country. Dale Dougherty, founder of Make: was invited to join the fun. You can see all his pictures and tweets from the weekend on Storify or check out Cairo Scene‘s wrap up of the 9 coolest projects from Maker Faire Cairo.
Making the World a Better Place
Engineering students at the University of Ottawa responded to a doctor’s challenge to make an accurrate pulse oximeter for under $25. This kind of device is used in emergency rooms to quickly diagnose blood clots and heart attacks by measuring the amount of oxygen in the blood. If you want to learn more about it, the university’s newspaper reported the story in more detail.
Sticky Situations
Print this out now! This handy glue reference chart is perfect for choosing the right glue for your projects. Need to glue leather to foam? Contact adhesives. Styrofoam to rubber? Liquid nails will do the trick. This chart will help you find what you need fast.
Rock On!
An old one, but a good one. Laughing Squid resurfaced this 2012 project from Damien Ludi and Colin Peillex. It’s a rocking chair that knits a perky little cap as you rock it. Imagine a happy little retirement home with a sunny wrap-around porch where sweet grannies rock their way through their knitting projects free of sore fingers. Or imagine a factory where the workers rock divots into the floor to meet the deliveries of a demanding overlord too cheap to pay for electricity. Clearly, this is a project with potential for both good and evil.
Cray-Cray for Crayons
Thursday was National Crayola Crayon Day! Did you do anything to get a hit of wax-scented nostalgia? As much fun as crayons are to draw with, we think they are a pretty cool material to make with. Just check out these amazing sculptures made with crayons!
Back to the Future
In homage to Marty McFly, a trio of Canadian university students—Mathieu Désilets, Salim Lounis, and Jean-Claude Macena—created an immersive hoverboard experience. Hop on the board and navigate your way through a rosy environment projected on the screens around you.
Tip of the Week:
Add metal powders to clear resins to make cold cast props. They’ll shine up like metal, rust like metal, and even attract magnets like metal. This is the perfect technique for those who don’t have the resources or space for traditional metalworking.
