Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these people come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

Every Day a Shirt is a Tumblr blog where crafter and entrepreneur Jesse Genet posts a freshly modded shirt, every day. Jesse is the co-creator of Inkodye, a photosensitive fabric dye that develops its color in sunlight. It’s pretty neat. Compared with screen printing, this process is a breeze. Jesse and her company, Lumi, will be at Maker Faire Bay Area this year, so plan to stop by and check out this interesting new technique for printing on fabric.
On a recent visit to Manchester to attend the Future Everything summit, I couldn’t pass up the chance to visit the UK’s first fab lab, housed in a striking, slab-like building in the waterside district of one of Britain’s great industrial cities. I spoke to Eddie Kirkby (of the Manufacturing Institute) and Haydn Insley (fab lab manager) to find out how the fab lab movement is spreading into the UK.
Brian Matthews of Flapping Sprocket creates beautifully intricate machinery, wings, and other contraptions in his Los Angeles studio. For the second year running, he will be at the Maker Faire Bay Area as a mobile exhibit, roaming the Faire with his hand puppet Francis, a metal marvel finely articulated enough to shake your hand.
Super Awesome Sylvia is one of favorite young makers. Her passion for making is infectious. So it was a real thrill for us and makers everywhere when we learned she was selected to go to the White House Science Fair yesterday to show her stuff and meet the man in charge: President Obama.
We are excited to announce that MAKE’s Volume 34 is here and on sale now. The new issue is filled with 21 projects and includes a special “Robot Uprising” section filled with half a dozen robot projects and profiles of robot makers. The cover features Eric Stackpole, one-half of the inspiring OpenROV project, a maker-made underwater robot with a great story behind it. Oslo, Norway’s Mini Maker Faire recently concluded and it sounds like a hit! Highlights included a costume workshop, a chessboard that plays music, as well as Miguel Valenzuela’s PancakeBot (pictured). See the Flickr group for pictures of the event.
