How heavy of an aquarium can your floor support?

How heavy of an aquarium can your floor support?

Aquarium-Neu-03Kevin writes – “One of the questions that is inevitably asked in every aquarium chat room, newsgroup and bulletin board is “just how large an aquarium can my floor support.” Then the answers follow from people who usually use basically correct structural principles to come to often incorrect conclusions. Unfortunately, I then jump into the fray and try to explain in just a few words, what cannot possibly be explained in just a few words. So the result is that no one fully understands my explanation, since it seems contrary to his or her experience. So here is the long winded explanation from some one (me) that has been working as a structural engineer since 1976.” Thanks Jason! Link.

Anonymous surfing for your USB thumb drive…

TorparklogoOne download and you’re set – “Download TorPark for your language, and put it on a USB Flash keychain. Plug it into any internet terminal whether at home, school, or public. Run Torpark.exe and it will launch a Tor circuit connection, which creates an encrypted tunnel from your computer indirectly to a Tor exit computer, giving the appearance of having the Tor exit computer’s IP.” [via] Link.

If Martha Stewart Were a Geek…

Make-1If Martha Stewart were a Geek…She would read MAKE! – article by Steven Levy in Newsweek! “A new life awaits your wheezing videocassette recorder… as a time-release cat-food dispenser. After only a weekend of work–two fun-filled days involving an old meat grinder, parts from a broken lawn mower and serious surgery on something called the video head drum assembly–you will have a Rube Goldberg-esque contraption that dispenses Tabby’s kibble while you’re away at the Burning Man festival.” Link.
