Maker Faire Detroit was hopping on the second and final day of the Faire. There was so much to see and do that today’s installment of images is just shy of double the number from Day One. No matter how many images you look at there is no substitute for checking out a Faire in person. Don’t worry, there are plenty of Maker Faires big and small, so check one out!
The Henry Ford is once again the host for the 4th annual Maker Faire Detroit. The combination of Detroit’s rich history as a city that made almost everything plus makers from all over the Midwestern United States and Southern Canada yields an excitement and vibrance unlike other Faires.
The Shed team has landed in Detroit, and we’ve brought dozens of great products with us. We’re right in front of the Henry Ford museum near the Power Racing Series track, in a massive tent that’s very hard to miss. We have everything from 3D Printers and Microcontrollers to Craft Kits and Wearables.
The countdown is on. Maker Faire Detroit is July 27-28 and it falls between our two biggest fairs of the year—Maker Faire Bay Area (May 18-19) and World Maker Faire New York (Sept. 21-22). It’s a special fair in a special place.
Detroit is a modern wonder. You’d be hard pressed to find an American city that rose so high and fell so far. At the height of its stature as the Motor City in 1950s, Detroit had a population of about 2 million. White flight to suburbs, the decline of the automobile industry, and resulting loss of the city’s tax base and crumbling infrastructure have whittled the city’s population down to about 750,000. But Detroit is far from out. Cheap rents, readily available real estate, and an ingrained culture of making are contributing to a grass roots renaissance that’s truly exciting to behold. The city is being reborn in real time. Our friends at Dark Rye created an inspiring video about the remaking of Detroit that focuses on Nick Britsky and i3Detroit.
