MAKE Flickr Pool Weekly Roundup

This week’s MAKE Flickr pool roundup is full of great Halloween memories. Our featured image, recalling Wednesday’s Cardboard Clone Trooper, is an equally-impressive cardboard Master Chief costume from user jek in the box. For sheer comedy value, my personal fave is user Unconverted’s QR code costume, lowermost, followed in close second by hine’s costume squid hat. And, somehow, to me, Chris Connors’ untitled skull-scrubbing shot sums up the maker Halloween experience quite nicely.

As I predicted, the third week of October has brought with it the MAKE Flickr pool’s first Jack-o’-lantern of 2011—a leering, laser-cut, LED-lit orange from Hacked Gadgets blogger Alan Parekh. I’m also pretty stoked about the bolt-shouldered, needle-felted frog from FeltedChicken (whose koi I featured last Monday), and the latest amazing steampunkery from gogglerman.

I’m beginning to suspect an October conspiracy: While last week’s Flickr pool submissions, on average, had a distinctly orange hue, this week they are distinctly black. And I’ll give dollars to donuts that next week, sure as clockwork, we’ll start to see actual jack-o-lanterns. Our featured image this week is cosplayer JiaJem,as “Jack,” from Mass Effect 2, sporting Shawn Thorsson’s sweet “Predator Heavy Pistol” replica prop.

It was as if there were some October-inspired conspiracy, this week, to turn the MAKE Flickr pool pumpkin orange! Fortunately I found some nice greens to round it out. Our first image this week is the mostly-completed “Most Spectacular Failure Award” trophy from last weekend’s handcar regatta. Other highlights include a beautifully printed and photographed mechanical differential, some 2-liter bottlecaps modified for a home carbonation system, and a brain in a jar. Mmmmmm. Brains in jars.
