Jimmy DiResta is a one-of-a kind maker who dreams up new projects each month and then films himself with a battered FlipCam and a shard of a mirror mounted to a tripod for reference. He speeds up the videos so you seem him complete the build in a matter of a few minutes. It’s mesmerizing to watch and he pushes wood through his bandsaw or welds what was a few strips of metal into a functional shape. His video technique is an art form of its own.
Up until yesterday I’d never met Jimmy, but since I was in New York for World Maker Faire I jumped at the chance to visit him in his natural habitat: his shop.
This video marks my one year anniversary with MAKE. It has been a great year! In this video I call out my top 5 favorites videos and some of the inspiration that went into them. If you’ve got ideas or suggestions for future videos and projects please let me know.
In each bi-monthly episode of DiResta (every other Wednesday at 2pm PST), artist and master builder Jimmy DiResta (Dirty Money, Hammered, Against the Grain, Trash for Cash) lets us into his workshop, to look over his shoulder while he builds whatever strikes his fancy. On this episode of DiResta, Jimmy reverse engineers a key to open a vintage lock.
