Warm Woolies Charity Knitting

I just finished reading this lovely post about Warm Woolies over at Craft Nectar. Called “knitting small things with great love,” Weeks talks about how she wanted to contribute something warm and concrete to orphanages like the one she adopted her daughter from. Warm Woolies sends toasty items knit by volunteers to children in Russia, Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia, as well as tribal reservations here in the US. I’m continually impressed with how generous the crafting community is, especially considering how much time these projects can take! Anyway, check out the Warm Woolies guidelines for more info on how to contribute. They have free patterns and tips for beginners!

Kids build the village of Hutopolis

Kids build the village of Hutopolis

Gather a group of potentially bored kids in an open space with tools and a heap of sawmill scraps, add summer vacation and what do you have? Hutopolis!

A village of eight huts was constructed during two weeks in July from timber slabs from an area sawmill, salvaged wood and found items. Each hut is different, based on the children’s design, with odd angles and shapes, rooftop lookout posts, windows, doors, ladders and a fire pit under a homemade shelter in the village center.

Minimalist T-Shirt Baby/Kid Pants

Last week we made some super simple and comfy yoga pants from a castoff T-shirt. This week we’re utilizing the same materials because, well, we all know the abundance of T-shirts in this world is somewhat overwhelming, and while we may not be able to wear all the ones we have, we don’t necessarily just want to get rid of them. This week’s project is the minimalist baby/kid pants using an old favorite stripey tee of mine.
