Bring to Light took place last weekend as New York’s incarnation of Nuit Blanche, an international night time arts festival. The Bring to Light organizers invited artists to make site specific installations of light, sound, performance, and projection art in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn. Among the artists were Sean McIntyre and Reid Bingham, who created this long exposure, programmable rainbow maker they call Rainbow Tracer.
I’ve been researching fun ways to use scrolling LED signs and came across this cool piece by Los Angeles-based visual artist Daniel DeSure. This unconventional LED scroller was on display as part of a gallery show called “Wouldn’t it be Nice?” that featured DeSure’s work in 2008. Wouldn’t it be nice to hang this over my couch? I think so.
Earlier this summer, Brett was working on a nifty 3 LED and 2 AAA battery holder design at the Boston Area Makerbot meetup. We get together when enough people feel the need, generally at Sprout in Somerville. When we got together again this week, he was able to happily report on the project and the role his making played in the big day.
The initial plan was to use throwies, but I felt they wouldn’t give as much light as a commercial 3 LED solution. This led me to a fun, albeit time consuming project.
While there are LED alternatives on the market for MR16 bulbs, the technology is still prohibitively expensive. I pulled one of the halogens and found the socket was simply two pieces of 19 gauge wire. I decided to free-form some circuits made of different colored LEDs around the thicker terminals.

Evolve or die! The Game of Life Kit, from the Maker Shed, is a simple electronic project that plays Conway’s Game of Life. Invented by Jeff Conway in 1970, it’s a mathematical game that simulates “colonies” that grow or die based on how crowded or lonely they are, and it’s known for the way it creates a beautiful organic display out of randomness. Make one kit and keep it on your desk, or attach multiple kit modules together to create a large display.
