Admittedly the sign is no longer “floating,” but I modified last week’s Weekend Project, the Floating Glow Display, using an empty CD jewel case, and these are the results. I wanted to be able to swap out the “sign” element of the Floating Glow Display, so the flip-lid of the jewel case allows me to do this (CD covers and inserts are an industry standard 12cm x 12cm).

My friend, and HacDC cohort, Erica Kane, put together this wonderful set of automated LED stairs together after seeing this post on MAKE. It is programmable to any user-defined light intervals and sequences.
Instructable user Esterill shows how to make your own swanky under-cabinet LED lighting scheme on a budget and the results are quite professional looking. For extra measure, Esterill used a microcontroller to fade the LEDs up when they’re turned on and added a “half bright” mode for times when dimmer light is desired. Nice touch!
The iGloLED programmable RGB rope light kit falls somewhere between your garden variety X-mas tree lights and professional grade carnival ride lights. At $300 for a 16.4′ set of 120 lights, they’re one of the more expensive options out there, but if you’re looking for a novelty lighting effect that’s fun to operate, the iGloLED set has to be one of the cooler options out there. They’ve been out for a while now, but have been an iPhone-only option until now.
