Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth — a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the maker movement.
Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these people come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

The TinyG is an embedded, multi-axis motion control system from Synthetos designed for CNC applications that require highly precise motion control for small to medium sized motors. The TinyG has been used with the Shapeoko and a previous version of the board was used as the basis for the Othermill electronics.
All through Maker Faire last weekend the team from ImageThink were working to illustrate the talks as they happened on the Innovation Stage. Graphically recording what was going on in each talk they tracked the flow of the conversation with high-speed drawing.
Jaws drop when makers see a five-axis CNC at work. That’s what happened to me when I saw PocketNC performing its magic. I peered closely and saw a spindle moving along two axes milling a piece of plastic mounted on a trunnion moving along/around three axes. At Maker Faire New York this weekend, Puppet Phactory provided interesting-looking junk items for kids to craft into puppets. Puppet Phactory is a collective of artists that have come together to produce a play called “Momma Junk.” Check out some of my favorite puppets that were on display.

Judging from people in attendance everyone wants to make a makerspace. At Friday’s session of Make a Makerspace there were representatives from schools, makerspaces, a library, economic development, museums and businesses. In attendance were 30 people from a wide variety of places.
We makers have “gotten it” for a long time. Makerspaces are creative, collaborative spaces for learning and making stuff. The institutions of society seem to be catching on which is good news. Better still, some are smart enough to realize that succeeding with a new makerspace is not easy and that learning from veterans is worthwhile. If you want to start a makerspace then this is the class to take.
