Maker Faire

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth — a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the maker movement.

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these people come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

Every City Should Have a Maker Faire

Every City Should Have a Maker Faire

London is the capital city of the United Kingdom, so why hasn’t anyone organized a Maker Faire here before? This was the thought running through my mind as I made my return train journey to South London, after a day out at Brighton Mini Maker Faire in September 2012. With over 8 million people living in London, a thriving creative community in the east end, and a 600-strong hackspace, it seemed like the obvious place for such an event, and a little under 10 months later, I found myself busily running around, walkie-talkie in hand, lanyard around my neck, and bunting above me, shouting , “we are about to open, is everyone ready?”

Maker Faire Detroit: The Midwest at its Best – What We Hope for Detroit

The fourth Maker Faire Detroit took place at The Henry Ford in Dearborn on July 27-28, 2013. When we first started planning Maker Faire Detroit five years ago, we knew it would be a challenge. The regional economy was as bad in 2008 as in any part of the country, and the forecast seemed grim. Yet, even then you could see hopeful signs, even in downtown Detroit. Now that Detroit has declared bankruptcy, one might think things have only gotten worse. I want to tell you that in fact they have gotten better and Maker Faire Detroit offers any number of hopeful signs, that there’s new life not just in Michigan but perhaps for the entire Rust Belt.

Maker Faire Detroit: Day Two

Maker Faire Detroit: Day Two

Maker Faire Detroit was hopping on the second and final day of the Faire.  There was so much to see and do that today’s installment of images is just shy of double the number from Day One. No matter how many images you look at there is no substitute for checking out a Faire in person. Don’t worry, there are plenty of Maker Faires big and small, so check one out!
