On an incredibly hot Michigan July day, we stopped by the grounds of Theater Bizarre to talk to it’s visionary, John Dunivant. John, an illustrator by trade, spoke to us about his inspirations for the carnival / masquerade / party / theme park he created, and gave us a tour of the grounds which formerly hosted this unique event.
Over the weekend we lost Diaspora co-founder Ilya Zhitomirskiy to suicide. I can honestly say that I was privileged to be his acquaintance.
This past May I came out to the Bay Area for Maker Faire. It so happened that the night before the Faire was to begin, the Noisebridge hacker space was having an event for speakers to present their projects in five minutes or less. When I delivered mine I happened to mention that I’m an NYU student. Being from the same alma mater, Ilya struck up a conversation with me. The topics covered were as varied as you might expect when two creative technologists get together. One thing that stuck out for me was his love for MAKE, especially the how-to videos by Bre Pettis he watched online as a teenager.

This week’s MAKE Flickr pool roundup is full of great Halloween memories. Our featured image, recalling Wednesday’s Cardboard Clone Trooper, is an equally-impressive cardboard Master Chief costume from user jek in the box. For sheer comedy value, my personal fave is user Unconverted’s QR code costume, lowermost, followed in close second by hine’s costume squid hat. And, somehow, to me, Chris Connors’ untitled skull-scrubbing shot sums up the maker Halloween experience quite nicely.
On today’s O’Reilly Radar, Alex Howard has a really nice write up about Dale being recognized by the White House yesterday. The piece includes a brief interview with Dale and an embed of the streamed event at the White House conference center.
Bill Brommer from the Horseless Carriage Club brought his restored Ford Model T delivery car to Maker Faire Bay Area 2011. We were thrilled to learn yesterday that Dale Dougherty, co-founder of O’Reilly Media, founder and publisher of MAKE, and creator of Maker Faire, has been summoned to the White House to receive recognition as a “Champion of Change.”
