I know that 3D printers have been all the rage lately, but let us not forget the humble CNC mill. It’s capable of fast and precise fabrication in a plethora of materials. It definitely earns a place on any serious maker’s workbench. The ShopBot Desktop is a prime example of a desktop CNC.
Digital Fabber’s CNC Jamboree recently held its second annual event in Long Lake Park in Lakeville, OH last month. It looked like a really cool event with demonstrations of CNC machines, classes on CBC best practices, and a show and tell of projects.
The Wikihouse collaboration at World Maker Faire this year was a highlight of the event.
Minneapolis ShopBot maestro Greg Flanagan made this 42″ CNCed representation of the moon, specifically a shot of the moon’s dark side. Greg used NASA’s GLD-100 lunar topographical map as a starting point, and the final piece is a gift to his wife Marie on their 5th anniversary.
ShopBot launched a Kickstarter campaign for its much anticipated Handibot and pre-orders for the mini CNC devices are moving fast. The company sold the 10, $1,995 early bird specials within the first hours of its campaign. As of this writing ShopBot had raised $25,000 of its $125,000 campaign.
