CTIA Wireless Conference…

Ctia MAKE pal Natalie Zee pretty much sums up why I’m not too bummed I skipped out on this year’s CTIA “Overall, there wasn’t much new stuff to see and it was a bit overrated. I didn’t see anything interesting or new in mobile entertainment either. What I came away with is that mobile phones are starting to get lighter as they do more. Which is a good thing”Link. Free Neighborhood Wi-Fi

Free Neighborhood Wi-Fi

How0905Wifi 170X200 The Fourth Street hotspot is part of a communal wireless project called Neighbornode, started by then New York University grad student John Geraci as a way to add a community-building aspect to the common practice of using a neighbor’s Wi-Fi network to get online. Anyone with a broadband connection can start a Neighbornode. When someone uses the node to access the Web, he is first directed to a home page with a message board, classified section and photo page to help locals recognize one another. Here’s how to do it in your hood’ Link.

Sharing the Wifi part II

Images-8Regarding our dispensing for free Wifi over EVDO today…Ian writes “one other thing you can do that’s nifty like that, I did a few years ago at macworld, my powerbook (a titanium) gets notoriously bad reception, however the guy with his iBook next to me had no problem getting on the network. so we did the sharing from airport to ethernet, plugged me in, and since actually both machines have autosensing ports, they connected right up and i was online, didn’t even need a crossover cable”.
