The How to Make a Makerspace workshop at the Bay Area Maker Faire

It’s time for another World Maker Faire! Soon, tens of thousands of people will come to New York to see hundreds of art pieces, robots, vehicles, and everything in between. Many of the pieces on display were created by dedicated makers working out of their garages, but a growing number of them are being designed and built in makerspaces around the country – spaces that provide access to equipment, training on that equipment, dedicated areas to work on your project, and a community of like-minded makers.

These spaces are now fostering makers who are creating projects that are having international impact; did you know that MakerBot, Square, Pebble Watch, OpenROV and 3Doodler all started in makerspaces? This Maker Faire, you’ll not only get a chance to check out the projects, you’ll also have the opportunity to learn how to create one of these spaces!

Building on the success of the original weekend-long How to Make a Makerspace workshop, and the consolidated one-day workshop offered the day before Bay Area Maker Faire, MAKE and Artisan’s Asylum are teaming up once again to bring you a day-long workshop designed to guide you through identifying, characterizing, and planning out a makerspace for your local community. Participants will slog through all the gory details of planning a space like acquiring insurance, passing building inspections, and creating a sustainable set of business models for your space as it grows into a size that makes sense for you and your location. We’ll have a bunch of information available from spaces across the country (both non-profit and for-profit) of various sizes that you can compare and contrast against, so that you can come up with the best plan of action to run your new space.

Interested? Join us by signing up on Eventbrite, and don’t forget to fill out the questionnaire to let us know a little bit more about your location and plans thus far. Be prepared to take notes, crunch some numbers, and think about big decisions you may have coming up.  Hope to see you soon!
