Austrian couple Benedikt Wurth and Rosi Binder have built the ideal sand art pen. Unlike sand pens already in existence, the Sand-Pen has a button which engages the built-in motor, allowing the sand to flow freely. Holding the pen close to a surface achieves fine line, while pulling the pen farther away gives a wider, more airbrushed look. I spoke with Benedikt about treehouses, tools, and his design process.

Coming right before Thanksgiving and the holiday season, Makers@theMint is a pop-up retail event featuring unique handcrafted goods and other maker merchandise. Makers will turn the old Mint into a giant maker department store. There will be a technology pavilion showcasing the latest technologies in and other pre-production prototypes.
One of my favorite things about the maker community is the ability of makers to take something that seems unremarkable and re-imagine and reengineer it as a tool for art or creativity. That’s why I love this this video featuring Brooklyn-based artist Joey Parlett and his fantastic texture drawing machine.
