Two California Stores Offer Demos of the Cube 3D Printer Today and This Weekend

Today and this weekend, Walmart will be featuring demos of the Cube personal 3D printer from 3D Systems at two of its stores in California and offering customers a chance to have themselves scanned to create a 3D printed figure as a unique holiday gift. MAKE will be at both locations from noon-2pm Saturday with copies of our 2014 Ultimate Guide to 3D Printing on hand and our new book about 3D printing: Leo the Maker Prince by Carla Diana. We’ll also be handing out $10 off coupons for the Maker Shed

Inkimals: 2D Hand Drawings Become 3D Personal 3D Prints

AMINIMAL Studio is a Brooklyn-based design company focused the use of emerging technologies as an approach to designing 21st century products. They recently wrote MAKE about their Kickstarter for the Inkimals project, a new 3D printing platform and web based app that enables the creation 3D toy designs from either 2D (hand-colored and scanned or computer modified) templates. The design is then 3D printed in one of several figure designs.

Stratasys Sues Afinia: Ramifications for the Desktop 3D Printing Industry

Earlier this week Stratasys, a longtime fixture in the commercial/industrial 3D printing world and recent purchaser of desktop printer company Makerbot, announced that it was filing a patent infringement lawsuit against Microboards Technology, LLC, the company behind the Afinia H-Series 3D printer. This lawsuit is a big deal that could have huge ramifications for the entire desktop 3D printing industry. Afinia is a well known 3D printing brand which was named “best overall experience” in MAKE’s inaugural 3D printing buyer’s guide last year. It is also widely available from mainstream outlets such as Radio Shack
