MAKE is excited to announce that our second 3D Printing Shootout Weekend will be held this Friday, Aug, 2 through Sunday, Aug. 4. This year the testing is bigger than ever with a team of 15 testers carefully reviewing 21 printers of all makes and models. The results of the testing will be featured in the buying guide section of MAKE’s forthcoming special 3D printing issue available in mid-November.
Occasionally, I’ll visit a frustrated makerspace. “We have a space. We have tools. Where are the members?” They describe how they’ve put energy into the physical aspects of the space and say nothing about the community building aspects.
ShopBot, creator of a line of popular CNC router tools, have collaborated with CAD powerhouse Autodesk to create a program that aims to bring digital fabrication tools into more schools around the country. Fifty ShopBot Desktops were set aside for teachers and educators in the US to claim through the promotion, “Digital Fab Tools for Schools,” and vouchers of $2,500 are available based on a first come, first served basis from 100kSchools.org.

We’ll discuss a few of the many possible ways to power your projects, whether it’s with a homemade bench-top supply, a solar panel hanging out of your window, or a kit like the Mintyboost.
