Nathan Roberts wrote a great step-by-step on how he revamped a plain bedroom into something special for his son. And with the pixelated retro Super Mario theme, this should appeal to some older “kids” in our audience as well.
I am usually immune to the yen for expensive man-cave trophies, but I gotta admit: I would have a great time standing over this thing with a beer in one hand and a meat fork in the other explaining to my guests how my fancy grill was handmade in Estonia from recovered naval mine casings.
Rob Cockerham–who has previously brought us spring shoes, a sweet Doc Ock costume, and How Much is Inside?, among other delights–wanted to serve a six-pack out of a solid block of ice. The block had to be cast with openings that would hold the bottles tightly but still let them slip loose when somebody wanted one. It took a bit of trial and error, but he eventually got the process figured out. The whole story is here. Rob hasn’t tried it yet, but he thinks, as I do, that one of these will probably float in a swimming pool fully loaded. Nice work, Rob! [via Boing Boing]

Inspired by the classic spherical speaker array Instructable from user mzed, Charles Visnic created these cool wireless speakers by transplanting the guts of a pair of RocketFish speakers into some of birch bowls from Ikea, mounted rim-to-rim. It’s a very cool build, but I have to say I’m just as impressed with this clever little working tip from Charles’ write-up:
These are from Etsy seller ikymagoo, who also has red and yellow versions. They seem a bit pricey to me at $200 a set, but it also seems like an easy re-make. There’s video here showing that shows more detail, including the binding posts on the back. Some info on a similar build is available in this thread at the DIY Audio Projects Forum
