A Conversation With 3D Artist Joshua Harker

Joshua Harker has been a maker and artist his whole life. He worked professionally as a product and toy designer for a few years before turning to 3D art. Within the last year and a half, he’s created the first and fourth most funded sculpture projects on Kickstarter, and sold thousands of beautiful works of art, all created with 3D Printing. I spoke to him about his process and his views on the current state of the 3D Printing industry.

This afternoon, more than sixty hardware hackers, makers, movers, and shakers defied the drizzle to gather under a large tent at Autodesk’s SXSW Create pavillion for the official SXSW Hardware Startup Meetup. Organized and hosted by Ryan Brown and Bartley Gillan, the main event was a panel discussion and open Q&A with SF Hardware Startup Meetup organizer Nick Pinkston and the founders of four active hardware startups representing some 1.75M in pledged crowdfunding dollars among them.

Right now there are two new micro-controller boards seeking funding—one on Kickstarter, and the other on Dragon Innovation’s new crowdfunding platform—that are slightly different. These boards aren’t just yet another Arduino clone, or yet another possible “Raspberry Pi killer.” These two boards, the Tessel from technical.io and the Espruino from Pur3, intend to take the path least travelled and co-op an existing community not traditionally associated with the maker community.
