Ray Alderman’s Manikin Figure Lamp with iPad 01 made a nice splash when we featured it in the MAKE Flickr pool roundup about a month ago, and Ray (aka Whamodyne) just wrote in to let us know that he’s recently posted a cool Instructable about how to make your own.
Named in honor of Madame Curie (whose full name was Maria Sklodowska-Curie), the Maria S.C. chandelier from Polish designer Pani Jurek allows for all kinds of interesting end-user customization options. And it’s hard to imagine an easier remake. [via CRAFT]
I really dig Luminch One, an excellent Make: Project by Francisco Castro:
Luminch One is an interactive lamp controlled by the movements of your hand. Wave your hand over it to turn it on or off, or move your hand up or down above it to change its brightness. Inside the lamp, an Arduino hooked to an infrared distance sensor tracks your hand and sets the state and the brightness of the LED lamp.
Summer in the city is upon us, making me covet days at the beach like it’s my job to do so. I love creating little escapes in my urban apartment and my bathroom is where I pretend I am sitting on a beach, grabbing a respite from the city heat. Rachel spotted this cool tutorial from Grathio labs. Illumination is provided by an LED strip, switched on or off by a whisker switch that detects the position of the cover. Mechanically dimmable by the simple act of opening or closing the cover at a wider or narrower angle.
My project this week is “by request.” I made the first one of these back in 2009, and it was later included in Garth Johnson’s creative reuse book. Since then, I have had many requests for a detailed tutorial. But it was the very polite e-mail I received from Jael last week that tipped the scales. Thanks, Jael!
Michael Rule of Providence, Rhode Island, printed the 12 pentagonal and 20 hexagonal modules of his Atomic Sun lamp on a MakerBot. I have to say, it looks more like a viral capsid to me, but I can see why one might want to avoid that as a name. The models are available on Thingiverse.
