Maker Faire

Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth โ€” a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the maker movement.

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these peopleย come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

Explore below to see the best of Maker Faire, and head to makerfaire.com for more information.

Building a Better Egg

Building a Better Egg

The egg is a near perfect food. It’s packed with protein, vitamins, and minerals. It tastes good and lends itself to a wide variety of foods–baked good, sauces, pasta, and of of course omelets. And it comes in a tidy, easy to transport package. But the way the vast majority of eggs are produced in this country is anything, but perfect. In fact, it’s rotten. But Josh Tetrick thinks he’s found a better way.

Cloning the DARwin-OP

Cloning the DARwin-OP

Kansas City programmer Michael Overstreet wanted his own high-performance humanoid robot to experiment with, but was deterred by the $12,000 pricetag of an off-the-shelf DARwin-OP. Though a significant fraction of the cost is tied up in the top-of-the-line servo actuators the design requires to perform at spec, Michael believed he could build his own “clone” of the fully open-source design, at substantial savings, by 3D printing as many pieces as he could in fused filament, on home equipment.

MAKE Welcomes Ken Denmead as Editorial Director

MAKE Welcomes Ken Denmead as Editorial Director

I’d like to welcome Ken Denmead to Maker Media. He’ll start May 13 as editorial director. He replaces outgoing editorial director Gareth Branwyn. Ken has been editor and publisher of Geekdad and publisher of Geekmom, which recently struck out on its own. Ken is a civil engineer who will be quitting his day job to join us at MAKE. We’re excited to have his energy and experience to help us shape our online community.

Every Day a Shirt

Every Day a Shirt

Every Day a Shirt is a Tumblr blog where crafter and entrepreneur Jesse Genet posts a freshly modded shirt, every day. Jesse is the co-creator of Inkodye, a photosensitive fabric dye that develops its color in sunlight. It’s pretty neat. Compared with screen printing, this process is a breeze. Jesse and her company, Lumi, will be at Maker Faire Bay Area this year, so plan to stop by and check out this interesting new technique for printing on fabric.
