MAKE Flickr Pool Weekly Roundup

MAKE Flickr Pool Weekly Roundup

Highlights from this week’s MAKE Flickr pool roundup include a solar-powered turntable, a lovely shot of a justifiably proud potter’s first wheel-thrown pots, a fantastically hare-brained concept sketch of a rocking chair with what appears to be a jet engine, and what may well be my favorite picture of Matt Richardson ever.

Recalling Everyday Things

Recalling Everyday Things

A few months ago on vacation on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, I went into a used bookstore which the proprietor proudly told me was “the westernmost bookstore in the United States.” Searching the shelves, I came upon a delightful four-volume series, “A History of Everyday Things in England“, written by Marjorie and C. H. B. Quennell, and first published in 1918. “Everyday Things” was written for boys and girls who “should be trained to do useful work and learn to use their hands.”

Scott’s Pentagonal Dragon Tiling on a Dodecahedron

Scott’s Pentagonal Dragon Tiling on a Dodecahedron

Each face of “DodecaHedron of Dragons II” by California artist Scott Van Note is identically patterned, hand-carved on a pentagonal tiling designed by Scott himself. I had the pleasure of meeting Scott at BAMF 2011, where he was helping out at the Explorable Microscopy booth. We started talking, and he handed me this amazing object. I caught up with him, after the Faire, and got him to answer a few questions about it.
