New uses for existing materials can fuel hardware innovation. Such was the case for Anton Willis who after moving to a San Francisco apartment had to put his beloved kayak into storage. No room for big toys. By coincidence around that same time he met Robert Lang, a physicist and renowned origami expert. The ideas of kayaks and origami fused in Anton’s mind and lead him on a journey that resulted in the Oru, an innovative folding kayak.

Made from recycled foil-lined cardboard beverage packets by designer Ed Chew. He’s figured out how to fold and interlink them such that only the silvery foil-lined side is visible.
This video has been released to promote a new university research initiative between MIT, Harvard, and the University of Pennsylvania aiming to develop a rapid manufacturing system for one-off problem-solving robots. Seems like an ambitious program, to me, but I like the idea of using fold-up papercraft chassis parts for prototyping or short operational life designs.
