The Water Quality Forum of Knoxville, TN, is sponsoring an artistic rain barrel contest to promote the use of rain barrels to catch roof run-off. Twenty local artists have decorated rain barrels, which are being auctioned off to raise money starting tomorrow. This one from Curtis Glover is making the rounds, but they’re all pretty awesome. The R2D2 Builder’s Club brings one of the world’s most beloved fictional robots to life. Steve Simmons and his hobby roboticist club use fabrication, programming, and remote controls to build exact replicas of R2D2. Their R2’s are quirky friends who roamed Maker Faire Bay Area 2011 delighting everyone they encountered.
Philadelphia area maker Jenn Hall improved the visual quality of her motorcycle helmet by turning it into a R2D2 helmet. The process included scuffing up the existing paint job and adding consecutive coats of spray paint and laboriously cut masking tape. The whole thing is finished off with some PVC tubing, some blinking lights, and plenty of clear coat. What a great way to liven up an otherwise mundane safety apparatus.
