In the Spring of 2011, I worked on a project with artists Steve Hanson and Elliot Clapp that was part of Apexart’s “Let it end like this” group show, curated by Todd Zuniga. Steve created a generative questionnaire that polled gallery-goers and presented them with their Last Words.
I first met my now-friend Thomas Edwards at an Artomatic opening (DC’s annual art free-for-all). He had an awesome piece, called Sycophant. It was a mannequin head on a track that ran along a wall in a hallway, detecting and following people, and saying things like: “I love your hair,” “Have you lost weight?,” and my favorite, “I want to lick you.”
While I really like a lot of the “mechanical animism” folk-art sculpture that’s out there — people making robot sculptures out of found objects and retro appliances, comical scenes and dioramas using electronic components, cellphone charms and jewelry made out of electronic parts, etc. Most of it’s immobile.
