DIY GPS tracking with Mologogo – review

MoloEarlier, we posted about the DIY cheap GPS tracking service Mologogo, you can get a cheap $60 pre-paid boost mobile phone, register on the site, download a Java app and you’re pretty much done. The phone will transmit your position to server (Uses Rails, Linux, Google Maps) and you/your friends can view where you are at in real time. I’ve hacked up tons of solutions to do the same thing, and this is simplest and cheapest (pretty much free if you have the phone, or $60 if you go pre-paid + 0.20 / day). Here are some photos and screenshots of the service in use…

The freaky part- Google Talk uses the same voice technology as Skype it seems, but uses an open standard for IM. I’m working on a way to record for podcasts, we’ll see how that goes…You can get the Google Talk client for PCs here HACK: The play numbers on the about screen translate to, “wumpusgame”… so, “play wumpusgame” If you invite wumpus.game@gmail.com and IM that user, “play” you can play ‘HUNT THE WUMPUS’ and finally – here are all the screenshots…

Geekwatch
This is a pretty fun article for the wrist watch geeks like me. I picked up a seemingly end-of-linePalm PDA watch for less than $70 and started experimenting on what applications can actually run on it- here are some of my picks (all free/opensource) – and how I read websites, ebooks, play Infocom text adventures, draw/view pictures and use scientific calculators…
