Filter and Purifying Water
Hiram writes “Ranger Rick” F. Tscherne, a former US Army Ranger, Drill Instructor, and an advisor/trainer, shows real means of survival one of which is how to purify water for drinking. Great learning site. Link.
Home Made Portable Dreamcast
Starting from the beginning though, as even the designers of the real Dreamcast would have done, David sketched possible ideas of what he wanted the console to look like, which was followed by a clay mold, then a plaster cast of it. The next step involved taking a 14″ x 18″ sheet of plastic, and heating it up. Once that’s softened up, it sits on top of the plaster cast while a home made vacuum chamber (instructions on how to build one can be found here) sucks all the air out from around it, making it fall into the shape of the cast… Link.
Motion-based iPod remote control
The goal of the motion-based iPod remote control was to design and build a remote control for the iPod that responds to a user’s motion. An accelerometer is used to detect the motion of a user. A microprocessor then interprets these movements and sends the appropriate commands to the iPod via its remote control port. [via] Link.
Laser-based tracking for real-time gesture acquisition
Off-the-shelf technology used in tracking fingers in high resolution for human interfaces…a simple active tracking system using a laser diode (visible or invisible light), steering mirrors, and a single non-imaging photodetector, which is capable of acquiring three dimensional coordinates in real time without the need of any image processing at all. Thanks Emeka! Link.

Dark stairs was a problem for the cat; an easy solution would have been to install a night light. However having laser beam activated LED stair lighting is much cooler than a plug in night light any day! Videos and pictures are on the site. [
