Social Coding company GitHub has released a free, in-browser viewer for STL files in full 3D. In comparison to the iterative, collaborative environments for working on software, hardware has a lot of ground to make up, and GitHub’s doing great work to push things along. I’m eager to see how this grows and how it’s used in comparison to popular services like Thingiverse.
A lot has happened in the world of 3D printing over the last week and the start of CES brought on a wave of new products, as it always does. 3D Systems announced two new printers in their Cubify lineup, and MakerBot made an official announcement regarding the release of their “experimental” dual extrusion printer, the Replicator 2X.
My college roommate, Mike Skalnik, a developer at GitHub, recently told me about their new MakerBot Replicator 2, which he and his coworkers have been working to automate so that anyone in the company can 3D Print things easily. They’ve been doing great things with it since it arrived at their San Francisco office little more than a week ago, and I had a chance to stop by when I was in the area for a closer look.
