Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth — a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the maker movement.
Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these people come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

The production crew at MAKE has been preparing all week. Sets and stages have been built. Communications and power have been put in place. Finally, everything is ready to go. It’s set-up day. This morning, the gates opened for makers and sponsors to check in and set-up their exhibits. The grounds are filled with sounds of tools, forklifts, and the occasionally noise of Arc Attack performing a sound check. The last event of the day was the paella dinner for makers, the traditional Maker Faire eve feast/party. Tomorrow: It’s showtime!
The fine folks of the Fun Bike Unicorn Club (FBUC) are hosting the second annual Death Defying Figure 8 Races this weekend, May 18 and 19, at Maker Faire Bay Area. One look at a handful of the pedal cars that will be racing this weekend, and it’s clear the competition is going to be […]
Space Palette is a fun instrument that combines visual and musical outputs. It works by waving your hands inside the holes of a wooden frame that looks a bit like an Atomic Age television screen of some sort. Depending on the location and depth of your hand, different sounds and projected swirling and multicolored visuals are generated.
Teachers love Maker Faire because they see how much it means to engage their students as makers. For Teacher Appreciation Week, we want to salute educators who bring the Maker movement to kids in schools and in after-school programs. We believe making has the power to transform education and develop the potential of every child to create and innovate. Getting making into schools can be difficult so we’re particularly happy to applaud the efforts of pioneering educators who are leading the way. It’s important that these pioneers realize that they’re not alone.
The Interactive Musical Tire Swing is a ton of fun to play with and was a big hit at Maker Faire Bay Area last year. In a nutshell, it plays soundtracks and musical beats depending on the rider’s acceleration and rotation. The Swing will be back at this year’s Faire, taking place May 18 and […]
If you’re an early-adopter, like so many makers are, then there’s a good chance you’ve already got a Pebble smartwatch. With the recent updates to the development platform, we’re starting to see a rush of fun, and functional custom watchfaces for the Pebble, as well as web-based tools for generating them.
In the MAKE spirit, and out of the imperative to show my maker pride at Maker Faire Bay Area in 9 days, I went ahead and made a custom MAKE watchface. If you see me at Maker Faire and show me your Pebble with the Make watchface, I’ll show you the secret maker handshake.
